Edward Thorp
Find an edge, size it by Kelly, and never risk ruin.
Edward Thorp was a maths professor who loved solving real puzzles with numbers. He was the first person to truly beat the casino card game blackjack, by carefully watching which cards had come out to find a tiny, real advantage. He then took the same thinking to the share market and ran a very successful investment fund for many years using maths and edge. He is most famous for one iron rule: never bet so big that a run of bad luck can wipe you out to zero.
The method
Find a small, real, explainable advantage - an edge - then bet in the right size for it, always keeping every single bet small enough that a bad streak cannot ruin you. He judged his decisions by their quality over many tries, not by any single win or loss, and he acted only when he genuinely had the tilt in his favour.
The record
His record is old, mostly from the United States, and quite specialised - first in casino games and then in a maths-driven investment fund. It came from rare skill, a team, and special tools, in markets and rules of a different time and place, so it does not transfer directly to an ordinary person picking shares in India today.
Where they were wrong
Real market edges are far, far harder to find than a blackjack edge, and they fade quickly as other clever people copy them. His approach needs genuine skill, patience, and strict discipline, and even he found market edges hard to keep. It is not a method for guessing single stocks or chasing tips, and most people who feel they have a market edge are really just looking at a lucky streak from a fair coin.
