Jesse Livermore
A cautionary study: what to learn, and what killed him - leverage without risk control.
Jesse Livermore was a legendary old-time trader from about a hundred years ago. He was so clever at reading prices that people came just to watch him work, and he made several huge fortunes. But he lost every one of them, again and again, and finally died broke. His life is a cautionary tale, not a model to copy. You can learn his few genuinely good habits, but you must understand that heavy borrowing, over-betting, and his own emotions destroyed him.
The method
He traded on price movements - trying to guess which way prices would go next and betting on it. At his best he was patient, waited for clear chances, cut small losses quickly, and followed the trend. But he often broke his own rules, borrowed large sums to bet far more than he had, put huge amounts on single ideas, and let his feelings decide.
The record
Famous for making several enormous fortunes, and just as famous for losing all of them. He became extremely rich more than once and was wiped out each time, ending his life broke. It is a record of huge wins and total losses together - a warning, not a model.
Where they were wrong
His risky, borrowed, emotional trading ruined him over and over. He knew the right rules and still could not follow them. Almost no ordinary person should copy any of his trading. The only safe lessons are patience and cutting losses quickly - nothing more; the rest of what he did is exactly what destroyed him.
