Jim Simons was a brilliant mathematics teacher who built a super-secret trading company called Renaissance, and inside it a fund called Medallion. It used PhD scientists, giant secret stores of data, and huge computers to trade shares, and it made money almost every single year - more than almost anyone in history. But how it worked is a black box even most of its own staff never fully knew. His results are legendary, yet his method is a sealed machine ordinary people cannot open or copy. The method

Hunt for tiny, faint patterns hidden in the market’s noise - edges so small no human eye could see them - using teams of top scientists, decades of cleaned secret data, and powerful computers. Each single edge was minuscule, but a computer traded these patterns millions of times, so the tiny tilts piled up like grains of sand into a mountain.

The record

Famous for extraordinary, steady returns over many years in the closed Medallion fund - one of the best records in the history of money. But the best part was deliberately shut to the public: the fund eventually returned outsiders’ money and ran mostly for its own insiders. Those returns were never available to ordinary investors and are not repeatable by anyone outside the walls.

Where they were wrong

Copying it needs world-class scientists, decades of secret data, and giant computers no ordinary person has. Most ‘patterns’ a person finds in old data are just coincidence, and tiny edges get eaten by fees, taxes, and crowds. Trying to be a home quant is a trap. Anyone selling a ‘secret algorithm’, ‘AI trading bot’, or ‘quant course’ is almost certainly a fraud: if a money machine truly worked, its owner would run it quietly and get rich, not sell copies to strangers.
