Thinkers & Behavioural

Nassim Taleb

Survive first: ruin is not recoverable, and the tails run the show.

Nassim Taleb is a writer and risk thinker, not a stock-picker. He warns that the biggest events in life and markets are rare, huge surprises nobody predicts - he calls them black swans. His main rule is survive first, because ruin is forever: never risk something you cannot recover from. He teaches building your money and your life like a muscle, so that shocks leave you stronger instead of shattering you, and trusting only advice from people who share your risk.

The method

A thinker about risk and survival, not a picker of shares. He does not tell you what to buy; he teaches how to arrange your money so that surprises cannot destroy you, and so that a lucky break can still find you.

The record

He is known for his books on risk - including The Black Swan and Antifragile - and for warning about fragile, over-confident systems before big crashes. He is famous as a thinker who was right about the danger of rare shocks, not as someone who tips winning stocks.

Where they were wrong

He is much better at warning about danger than at predicting exactly what will happen or when. Being always ready for disaster has a real, boring cost - you give up some ordinary gains and can look dull for years. And taken too far, his extreme caution can mean sitting out normal, sensible growth while waiting for a storm that comes late, or not at all.
