Nemish Shah
Concentration, patience and capital discipline, away from the noise.
Nemish Shah is one of Indias most respected and most private long-term investors. He keeps a very low profile and rarely appears in public or in the media. His known style is to own only a few businesses that he understands very deeply, and to hold them patiently for many years. He is admired for his calm discipline, his willingness to say no, and his habit of staying far away from the markets noise. Because he shares so little publicly, we can only study his broad investing style, not his private details.
The method
His method is quiet and simple to describe but hard to do. He concentrates in a small number of businesses he knows deeply, instead of spreading thinly across many. He then holds for many years and does very little, letting time do the work. He keeps his standards high and his cash ready, saying no to most ideas and yes only to the rare good-and-cheap one. And he thinks independently, ignoring tips, TV, and the excited crowd.
The record
Nemish Shah is widely regarded as a highly successful and respected long-term Indian investor. Because he is so private, very little about his actual holdings or returns is public, and this study keeps to his broadly-known style rather than any specific numbers. Whatever his past results, they are history, not a promise.
Where they were wrong
His style is powerful but not easy to copy. Deep concentration in a few businesses is risky if even one pick is wrong, because there is little else to soften the blow. Great patience sounds simple but is very hard in real life, when prices fall and everyone around you is busy and excited. His discipline of saying no can slide into never buying if it turns into fear. And because he is so private, there are few detailed public lessons to learn from directly.
