Attack The Big Three

The rule

Cut housing, travel and food, not the tiny cups of chai.

Where it flips

Slashing the big three too hard can make life miserable and push you to quit the plan. The repair is to cut where it does not hurt daily happiness, and keep the plan livable.

For most households, three costs are the biggest: the house, getting around, and food. These three eat most of the money. Trimming them frees far more than skipping small treats. Giving up a 20-rupee snack barely helps. A cheaper home or commute saves thousands every single month.

A worked example

Vikram stopped fussing over chai and instead shifted closer to work. His travel and rent bill fell 8,000 a month, straight into savings. [illustrative]

How to spot it

  • ·You save on snacks but ignore rent and travel
  • ·Housing, travel and food are never questioned
  • ·Your biggest bills have stayed the same for years
