Design The Money Environment
The rule
Make the good money choice automatic and the bad one hard to reach, like keeping sweets in a high cupboard.
Where it flips
Smooth default settings can also lull you into never checking anything, so a wrong setting runs unnoticed for years. The fix: set up good defaults, but keep one fixed review point where you actually look under the hood.
Self-control is shaky, so stop leaning on it and shape your surroundings instead. Set the SIP to auto-debit before you can spend the money. Then put real friction in front of harm, like deleting the trading app, so a bored tap can't become a trade. The winner is usually not the strongest-willed person, but the one whose default settings do the work. Arrange your money world so the right thing happens even on a lazy day.
A worked example
Vikram kept 'meaning to invest', but the cash always vanished first. So he moved the SIP to auto-debit on salary day, and uninstalled the trading app that tempted him into daily bets. His saving rose, because the good choice now needed no effort and the bad one needed a re-install. [illustrative]
How to spot it
- ·Relies on willpower each month
- ·Trading app one tap away
- ·SIP not automated
