Quality Is The Master Filter
The rule
Be strict about one master trait, business quality, and most of the other good things tend to come along with it.
Where it flips
Worshipping quality becomes a trap when you pay any price for it, or stop looking under the hood because the label "quality" feels safe. The fix is to keep quality as the filter, but still check it fresh each time, and still care what you pay.
Instead of juggling a dozen separate checklists, pick one thing to be strict about: the quality of the business itself. A truly high-quality business usually already has honest managers, strong earnings, low debt, and steady demand. Those traits travel together, not by accident. So if you filter hard for quality first, many of the other things you want quietly arrive as a package. Getting this one master filter right does most of the work.
A worked example
Aarvi stops trying to grade companies on twenty scattered numbers and asks one demanding question: is this a truly excellent business? The survivors of that test almost always have clean books and sensible debt too. [illustrative]
How to spot it
- ·one demanding standard, not twenty loose ones
- ·good traits clustering together in the same company
- ·quality checked, never assumed from reputation
