Reward follows intelligent effort

The rule

You cannot beat the market cheaply. Extra return matches the real, hard homework you actually put in.

Where it flips

But effort alone does not promise reward. Busy, frantic trading is effort that destroys returns. The fix is that the effort must be smart, meaning careful study and patience, not just activity.

This is Graham's honest deal. You do not beat the market with tips or vague cleverness. You earn it with real, steady, expert-level study. If you are not willing to do that work, the smart move is to not try. Instead, buy a low-cost index fund and keep the market's return cheaply.

A worked example

Aarohi wants better-than-market returns but spends only ten minutes chasing tips. Graham's rule says she will do worse than the market. Her honest choices are to do serious homework, or buy a low-cost index fund and stop pretending. [illustrative]

How to spot it

  • ·hoping to beat the market with little work
  • ·tips standing in for real study
  • ·no honest choice between real work and indexing
