Time is the real dividend

The rule

The best thing money buys is control over your own time. Doing what you want, when you want, with whom you want.

Where it flips

But chasing freedom can turn into hoarding money you never use. The fix is to spend enough to actually live the freedom you saved for, not to worship the bank balance.

Once your needs are met, extra money matters most for the freedom it buys, not the things it buys. A simple life you fully run beats a richer one you do not control. When you weigh a money choice, ask what it does to your freedom, not just your net worth.

A worked example

Two people take home the same pay. One keeps six months of expenses saved and can walk away from a bad job. The other, stretched to the last rupee, cannot. The first is richer in the only way that reliably buys a better day. [illustrative]

How to spot it

  • ·a raise that buys more duties, not more choice
  • ·envy of visible things over invisible freedom
  • ·no cushion that lets you say no
